You may be well aware of the fact that medicines are effective only for a limited period of time. Tablets and syrups lose their efficiency once the expiry date is reached. In rare cases they may also prove harmful. This holds true for herbs and other medicinal plants as well. However, many of us seem to be unaware that medicines can also lose their intended effects due to improper storage conditions. Thus, storage conditions for herbal medicines should be ideal so as to secure the effectiveness of the drugs and medicinal plants.
Ideally, the manufacturers prescribe storage conditions for herbal medicines and care should be taken to follow them. The very first necessity is a clean and dust-free place. Avoid exposure to excess light. Put medicines in special cabinets or boxes if the manufactures so indicate. The premises should be able to prevent the entry of insects. No medicinal product should be ever stored in damp conditions. Make a regular check for any leakages and dampness.
It is not advisable to keep medicines in the bathroom, as is the general practice. It negates all the precautions given out for storage conditions for herbal medicines. Do not keep medicines in the kitchen either, as they could be confused for food products. Another factor is the heat generated in the kitchen. Keep medicines out of the reach of children. You can place your medicines in a cabinet in the dining room or in the bedroom of any of the adult member of the family. However, make first aid kits accessible to every member. Keep medicinal plants in sunlight as advised by the medical practitioner.
